Scottish schoolgirl celebrates competition win

A seven year old schoolgirl from Linlithgow is celebrating after winning first prize in a competition to raise awareness about coeliac disease.

Anna Law won the first prize of a new Nintendo DSi for her entry in an ‘inventa pizza’ competition.

Organised by leading free from bakery Livwell, the launch of the competition coincided with the start of Coeliac UK’s annual awareness week on 11th May and aimed to raise awareness of coeliac disease amongst children in a fun and imaginative way.

Livwell invited children to submit either drawings or photographs of their own pizza Anna Law receives her prize from Livwell's Commercial Director, Paddy Cronin inventions to win a ‘must have’ Nintendo DSi worth £150. Anna’s winning entry was a ‘smiley’ sweetcorn, sausage and chicken pizza.

Anna, who attends St. Joseph’s Primary School in Linlithgow, was diagnosed with coeliac disease just over a year ago following a family screening that was advised after her brother became seriously ill with the disease. She has had to adapt her diet to exclude gluten, a type of protein found in wheat, rye and barley.

Of the condition, Anna says; “Luckily, I really like cooking and baking, so I have experimented with foods that don’t contain gluten since my diagnosis - pizza is my favourite and Livwell’s pizza bases are really nice.”

When not experimenting in the kitchen, Anna enjoys swimming, Brownies and playing games.

Livwell’s Commercial Director Paddy Cronin explains the rationale behind the competition; “Whilst a growing number of children are being diagnosed with coeliac disease, awareness levels of the condition amongst non coeliac children appears to be low.

We launched the competition to increase awareness of what living with coeliac disease means to the tens of thousands of children like Anna.  These children face a future with a restricted diet and the consequences of accidental gluten consumption is potentially catastrophic.  If children are aware of the implications of living with coeliac disease, we are hoping that they may be more sympathetic towards their peers.”

Livwell is one of the leading suppliers of tasty gluten free bread, cakes and pastry products and enjoys prescription status for its range of gluten, wheat and milk free sliced white and brown bread, white rolls and white baguettes.  The extensive range is available from selected retailers, by calling the bakery on 0845 1200038 or online from www.gffdirect.co.uk
